Photoshoot in The Hague: Preserving Dutch Memories Before Heading Home

Preserving Moments of Transition Through Photography

A recent photography session in The Hague brought me the distinct pleasure of working with two well-traveled teenage boys. As a seasoned photographer, I'll confess that a little apprehension crossed my mind initially, understanding well how most teenagers could be somewhat resistant to the idea of photo shoots. However, my worries quickly evaporated once they confidently posed in front of my camera.

The purpose behind these photos, as shared by their mother, was to commemorate significant milestones in their lives. The family had been residing in The Netherlands for over two years and were now preparing to move back to the United States. One of the boys was transitioning from junior high to high school, while the other had just graduated high school and was on the brink of his college journey. These transformative moments needed to be captured by a professional photographer before they embarked on their next adventure.

Dressing For The Photoshoot

The beauty of my job as a photographer lies in the creative collaboration with clients, often involving Pinterest boards and text exchanges, to finalize the perfect wardrobe for the shoot. This time, however, Mom had a distinct plan. She wanted her sons to wear custom suits they had commissioned during a family trip to Thailand, and they were the perfect fit for the occasion.

The result was nothing short of spectacular. The boys looked absolutely sharp, and their well-tailored suits exuded an air of sophistication and confidence, making my job as a photographer in The Netherlands both exciting and rewarding. What's more, these suits were not mere accessories; they held cherished memories. The older brother's suit was his attire for prom at their international school, while the younger one wore his to a dance.

Capturing the Dutch Life

Mom requested that I integrate elements of the Dutch lifestyle into their photos, a unique facet of their lives that the boys would carry with them back home. The contrast between their suburban Texas upbringing and Dutch city living would undoubtedly make for interesting discussions.

Our photoshoot location was The Hague Central, a place where modern and historical architecture converge amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, creating a distinctive mural-like backdrop. Among the photos captured, my personal favorite features the boys in front of a passing tram, a classic symbol of the Dutch transportation system, an integral part of living in The Netherlands.

Farewell to The Netherlands

Returning to one's roots can stir a whirlpool of emotions. There will be facets to miss, like the friends they've made here and the simple pleasure of local bread. Simultaneously, the joy of reuniting with extended family and diving into TexMex can't be underestimated. Or perhaps, that's just what I miss about Texas, lol?

As this family prepares for their journey back home, I send them off with my best wishes. Their shared milestones and memories of The Netherlands, now immortalized through my photographs, will serve as a heartfelt reminder of this cherished chapter in their lives.
